Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Igbajo, Boluwaduro Local Government Area, following violent clashes that erupted in the community on Sunday night and continued into Monday morning.

According to the state government, the tension in the town was triggered by the recent death of Prince Adegboyega Famodun, who passed away last week after a brief illness. His death reportedly heightened long-standing disputes within the community, leading to the current breakdown of order.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the governor ordered an immediate and total lockdown of Igbajo to prevent further escalation and to restore calm.

Governor Adeleke condemned the violence, stressing that his administration would not tolerate any form of civil disorder capable of disrupting the peace enjoyed across Osun State.

“It is with shock and dismay that I received reports of the unrest in Igbajo. As a government committed to peace and the rule of law, we will not fold our arms and allow any breakdown of order in any part of the state,” the governor said.

Declaring himself as the Chief Security Officer of the state, Adeleke announced the full curfew “with immediate effect,” stating that normal activities in the town would remain suspended until peace returns.

Security operatives including the Army, Police, DSS, and NSCDC have been directed to carry out round-the-clock surveillance and enforce the curfew across the community.

The governor also issued a strong warning to residents and visitors, cautioning them to avoid any actions, whether open or hidden, that could fuel further unrest. Anyone found instigating or participating in violence, he said, will face the full weight of the law.

The crisis follows the passing of Famodun, a former Osun APC chairman and the embattled 30th Owa of Igbajo, who died on Friday at age 67. Famodun’s kingship had been a subject of legal and political disputes. Installed as monarch in 2022 under former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, he was later removed by Governor Adeleke through an executive order and replaced by Oba Ademola Makinde.

However, in January 2025, a High Court reinstated Famodun, a ruling now before an appellate court.
