Nigerian music star Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has said that poverty not death is his greatest fear.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Nancy Isime Show, the award-winning singer reflected on his tough upbringing and explained why he never wants to experience poverty again.

Okoye recalled a painful childhood incident when his family’s one-room boys’ quarters apartment was demolished without warning after the landlord sold the property.

“We were eight children living with our parents in a single room separated by a curtain,” he said. “One day, a bulldozer just came and started bringing the house down while we were still inside. We were begging for more time to relocate, but they didn’t wait.”

He said the memory of that hardship continues to drive him.

“I’m not afraid of death. What I fear most in this life is poverty and being broke. I’ve tasted it before, and I don’t ever want to go back there,” Mr P added.
