The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed his commitment to expanding the participation of women officers in tactical, operational, and command positions within the Nigeria Police Force.

He made the pledge on Thursday in Abuja during an event marking 70 years of women policing in Nigeria.

Egbetokun praised the contributions of female officers, stressing that the Force would continue to oppose all forms of discrimination, harassment, and career barriers affecting women.

“We draw strength from you, we celebrate your intellect, we rely on your courage, and your service inspires the entire nation,” he said.

Addressing younger female officers, he noted that they were not only inheriting a legacy but actively shaping the future of policing in Nigeria one rooted in professionalism, compassion, competence, and bravery.

He emphasized that women in the Force are not side figures but are central to the institution’s identity.

Reflecting on the history of women policing, Egbetokun said the journey began in 1955 with a small group of pioneering women who were confined to duties such as juvenile welfare, clerical tasks, and cases involving women and children.

Despite these limitations, he said, they demonstrated exceptional discipline and courage that helped transform the institution.

Today, women officers serve across all levels of policing operational, investigative, tactical, administrative, and strategic roles highlighting their resilience, adaptability, and commitment to national service.
