The Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has released a 54-man provisional list ahead of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled to hold in Morocco later this month.
The list, published on all Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) platforms on Tuesday, features several big names. Captain William Troost-Ekong, Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali are among the key stars included.
Also on the roster are other established internationals such as Maduka Okoye, Zaidu Sanusi, Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi, Raphael Onyedika, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, and Chidera Ejuke.
Chelle has cast his net wide by giving opportunities to several home-based players, including Abdulrasheed Shehu, Ebenezer Harcourt, Ekeson Okorie, Chisom Orji, and Adekunle Adeleke. This move signals his desire to closely assess local talents before the final squad is selected.
According to the NFF, only 28 players will make the final cut.
The Super Eagles will open their training camp in Egypt on December 10, where they are expected to play a series of friendly matches as part of their preparations. The AFCON tournament kicks off on December 21.
Nigeria has been drawn in Group C, alongside Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda.
