The Federal Government has announced public holidays to allow Nigerians celebrate Christmas, Boxing Day and the New Year.
According to the announcement, Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, 2025, have been declared public holidays for Christmas Day and Boxing Day, while Thursday, January 1, 2026, will be observed as a holiday to mark the New Year.
The declaration was made in a statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
In the statement, the minister encouraged Nigerians to use the Christmas season to reflect on the values of love, peace, humility and sacrifice symbolised by the birth of Jesus Christ.
Tunji-Ojo also called on citizens, regardless of their religious or ethnic background, to take advantage of the festive period to pray for peace, improved security and national development.
He further urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding and security-conscious throughout the celebrations.
“The Christmas season and the New Year offer an opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen the bonds of unity, show compassion to one another, and renew our collective commitment to nation-building,” the statement read.
The minister extended warm Christmas and New Year greetings to Christians in Nigeria and across the world, as well as to all Nigerians, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
