Senate-new

The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs on Thursday screened two former ministers, Femi Fani-Kayode and Abdulrahman Dambazau for ambassadorial postings.

Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation, and Dambazau, who once served as Minister of Interior had previously undergone full Senate screenings when they were appointed ministers in past administrations.

During Thursday’s exercise, the committee kept things brief. After introducing themselves, both nominees were asked to “take a bow and leave,” a long-standing Senate tradition reserved for individuals who have already been vetted and have a strong public service record.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele defended the practice, explaining that the gesture is typically extended to those with established and verifiable credentials, including anyone who has previously served in the National Assembly.

According to him, the lawmakers are already familiar with the nominees’ careers and public reputation, making an extended screening unnecessary.

Their nomination will now move to the full Senate for final approval.

The screening followed President Bola Tinubu’s submission of 32 ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation on November 29.
