President Bola Tinubu on Monday evening held a closed-door meeting with Nigeria’s Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Aso Rock, Abuja.

Security sources confirmed that the meeting began around 6:01 p.m. local time, shortly after the military chiefs arrived at the villa and were ushered into the President’s office.

This is Tinubu’s first engagement with the military high command since the swearing-in of General Christopher Musa (retd.) as the Minister of Defence on December 4.

While details of the meeting were not disclosed, it comes at a critical time for the country’s security. At least 115 students abducted from a Catholic boarding school in November are still being held by kidnappers.

The discussion also follows Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency on November 26, during which he ordered fresh recruitment into security agencies and directed that police personnel be withdrawn from VIP protection duties.

Additionally, the meeting takes place just days after the Senate approved the President’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to neighbouring Benin Republic after reports of an attempted coup in the country.

The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape Nigeria’s next steps in tackling growing security challenges at home and within the sub-region.
