President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally asked the Senate to approve the deployment of Nigerian troops to Benin Republic as part of efforts to help stabilise the country following an attempted coup.
In a letter sent to the upper chamber, the President explained that the troops would embark on a peacekeeping mission aimed at supporting Benin’s government during the ongoing political turmoil.
The request follows Sunday’s reported coup attempt in Cotonou, where assailants attacked the residence of President Patrice Talon in the Le Guézo area. The disturbance prompted swift regional concern and security responses.
Just recently, the Nigerian Air Force, working in coordination with Beninese security forces, carried out targeted operations to help quell the uprising and prevent further escalation.
Tinubu’s request is now before the Senate for consideration as Nigeria continues its role in promoting stability within the West African region.
