A final-year student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, Aisha Balogun, has made history after emerging as the first female president of the Ilobu National Students’ Union (INSU) in Irepodun Local Government Area of Osun State.

Balogun, a 500-level student of Agricultural Economics, clinched victory at the recently concluded INSU election, breaking a long-standing gender barrier in the union’s leadership since its establishment 34 years ago.

According to findings by Insightlinks Correspondent, the newly elected president, fondly known among her peers as “Omo Balogun,” contested the position against a student of Mass Communication from Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, in what observers described as a keenly contested election.

The electoral process, which witnessed significant student participation, was overseen by the INSU Electoral Committee.

Announcing the results, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Olawale Abdulhamid, disclosed that Balogun secured 186 votes, with 24 voided ballots, while her opponent polled 157 votes, with 27 void votes, out of a total of 394 votes cast.

Balogun’s victory was widely attributed to her extensive experience in student leadership and community service.

Before her emergence as president-elect, she had served the union in various capacities, including Assistant Public Relations Officer, Welfare Director and Vice President, roles through which she earned commendations for dedication and effective leadership.

Her emergence has been celebrated by students and stakeholders within Ilobu, who described the outcome as a major step towards inclusive leadership and women’s representation in student governance.

Supporters have expressed optimism that her administration will bring renewed focus on student welfare, unity, and development of Ilobu indigenes across tertiary institutions.
