Vice-President Kashim Shettima has announced that the Federal Government has deployed additional tactical security teams to Maiduguri, Borno State, following a deadly attack on a mosque in the state capital.

The move comes after suspected terrorists detonated an explosive at Al-Adum Mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, around 6 p.m. on Wednesday while worshippers were gathered for prayers. The blast reportedly claimed five lives and left several others injured.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, Shettima condemned the attack, describing it as “a despicable assault on innocent citizens and the peace of the nation.”

According to him, President Bola Tinubu has ordered an immediate intensification of security operations across Borno State to track down and apprehend those responsible.

“The Federal Government is working closely with state authorities and local security agencies to protect vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure across the North East and other parts of the country,” the Vice-President said.

Shettima stressed that the government would not tolerate any attempt to undermine national peace and security, noting that security agencies are working round the clock to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

He expressed confidence in the existing security framework to not only apprehend the attackers but also unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Vice-President also sympathised with the Borno State Government, residents of Maiduguri, and families who lost loved ones in the attack, assuring them that justice would be served.

Reaffirming the Tinubu administration’s commitment to national security, Shettima said the government remains steadfast in its constitutional responsibility to safeguard the unity, stability, and security of Nigeria.

“We will continue to provide our security agencies with all the necessary resources and support to decisively defeat terrorism in all its forms,” he added.
