Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has criticised Mohamed Salah over his recent outburst about Liverpool, warning that the Egyptian forward is putting his legacy at Anfield at risk.

Salah caused a stir on Saturday after saying Liverpool had “thrown him under the bus” and hinting at a strained relationship with manager Arne Slot. Speaking on his podcast, Rooney said Slot must respond firmly to the situation.

According to a BBC Sport report on Monday, Rooney advised that Salah should not be included in Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures on Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Inter Milan or the Premier League game against Brighton in the weekend.

“Arne Slot has to show authority,” Rooney said. “He should pull Salah aside and tell him, ‘You’re not travelling with the team, your comments were unacceptable. Go off to AFCON, cool off, and let things settle.’ If it were up to me, he wouldn’t be anywhere near the squad right now.”

Rooney added that Salah must quickly resolve his issues with Slot or consider leaving the club altogether.

“It needs to be sorted out quickly,” he said. “This shouldn’t be dragging on.”

The former England captain also questioned Salah’s decision to voice his frustrations publicly, especially considering his status as one of Liverpool’s greatest modern players since joining from Roma in 2017.

“He’s destroying his legacy at Liverpool,” Rooney said. “It would be sad to see him throw everything away, he’s handled this poorly.”

PUNCH Online earlier reported that Salah had expressed disappointment over reduced playing time and suggested someone within Liverpool was trying to make him a scapegoat for the club’s recent struggles.
