The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports suggesting that Governor Dauda Lawal demanded the removal of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, as a precondition for joining the party.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the APC Publicity Secretary in the state, Yusuf Idris, said Governor Lawal is not in a position to make such demands, adding that the governor had previously made attempts to align with the APC but was not transparent about his intentions.

The party also emphasized Matawalle’s political strength in Zamfara, describing him as a major force and noting his significant role in the Tinubu/Shettima presidential campaign, where he served as the Northwest Campaign Director-General.

According to the APC, Governor Lawal has consistently opposed some of Matawalle’s security interventions in the North West. The statement accused the governor of refusing to allow the minister establish an operational base in Zamfara during federal anti-banditry operations.

The party further stated that Matawalle continues to attract defectors from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) both in Zamfara and Abuja, a development it believes underscores his influence in the state.

The APC advised Governor Lawal to follow the proper procedures and consult party leaders if he genuinely intends to defect, instead of allegedly setting conditions.
