Alunmi of Ansarudeen Grammar School, Ilobu, Osun state on Wednesday, awarded scholarships to outstanding students of the school as part of efforts to support academic excellence and give back to their alma mater.

The historic event saw no fewer than seven students given free forms for West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.

Addressing the students, Ismahil Jare Tiamiyu, a member of the Governing Board of the School, said the scholarship was a collective efforts of old students of the school across different classes.

“This scholarship is in fulfilment of our vow to start contributing to the school. It’s the first edition of it and I can say it was a collective effort of many old students across different sets.

“We are committed to do more next year as more of us are willing to support this course. This is our roots, our alma mater and it is our delight to contribute to your development. During our days, government did pay for WASSCE but that is no more now. This is why we insist on supporting you and your parents to reduce the burden”, Tiamiyu who is a member of 2010 class said.

Speaking at the event , Mr Ibrahim Adeshina Olukuta, the Head Boy of the 2008 set and the school’s second set said the initiative was organised to commend students who have shown strong academic performance and good conduct.

He added that the gesture was just a starting point and expressed optimism that more students would benefit in the future if more alumni joined the initiative.

“We came to commend students who have been doing wonderfully. Today, we awarded them scholarships,” Olukuta said.
“We were able to pick seven students and pay for their WAEC. We hope to do more than this. We want to use this medium to call on our colleagues to come to our aid as well,” he added.

Olukuta stressed that collective effort could significantly improve the welfare of students, noting that the group could sponsor many more beneficiaries.

“We can sponsor 20, 50 or even put every student on scholarship. It will serve as motivation for the students,” he said.

However, he also drew attention to challenges facing the school, particularly the poor state of infrastructure. He described the condition of some buildings as worrying and lamented the absence of toilet facilities in the school.

“We also want to call attention to the state of things in the school. The buildings are in bad condition, and the school has no toilet, which is unfortunate,” he said.

The Vice Principal of the school, Mr. Wasiu Jimoh commended the old students for their kind gesture and described it as a worthy example of giving back.

“We want to thank you for what you have done. You are truly giving back to the school you left some years ago,” he said.
“We pray that Allah will continue to enrich your pockets,” Jimoh added.

Winners of the scholarship were drawn from science, arts and commercial departments.

The event ended with appreciation from students, who described the scholarship award as timely and encouraging.
