The Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has granted bail to Adeniyi Kayode, the driver who was behind the wheel when former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a tragic road accident that claimed two lives.
Kayode was admitted to bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties, as the court adjourned the matter until February 25, 2026, for further hearing.
The 46-year-old driver is facing trial over the fatal crash that occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The accident led to the deaths of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, both key members of the boxer’s team.
Kayode was arraigned on January 2, 2026, before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care resulting in bodily harm and damage to property, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence. The alleged offences are said to contravene provisions of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
During proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Nijiwe Richard, requested an adjournment to allow the case file to be forwarded to the Ogun State Attorney General’s Office, through the Department of Public Prosecutions, for legal advice in the interest of justice. The defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the request, insisting that the defence was ready to proceed with trial.
However, in her ruling, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s application and fixed February 25 for continuation of the case.
The accident involved a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, Kayode, and the two deceased aides, which reportedly collided with a stationary truck on the highway. Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries and were treated at a hospital.
Joshua was later discharged after doctors confirmed he was clinically stable to continue his recovery at home. Accompanied by his mother, the boxing star later visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay his last respects to Ayodele and Ghami before their remains were flown back to the United Kingdom.
A funeral prayer service for the two men was held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque. Their deaths have been widely described as a devastating loss, sending shockwaves across the international boxing community, where both men were regarded as indispensable figures in Anthony Joshua’s camp.
