The son of renowned Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner is expected to appear in a Los Angeles court on Wednesday to face charges over the brutal killing of his parents.
Nick Reiner, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder following the stabbing deaths of his father, legendary director Rob Reiner, and his mother, photographer Michele Singer Reiner. The tragic incident, which occurred just days before Christmas, has sent shockwaves through Hollywood and beyond.
The bodies of the couple were discovered on December 14 at their upscale Brentwood home in Los Angeles. Prosecutors say the 79-year-old filmmaker celebrated for directing classics such as When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men and his 70-year-old wife were stabbed to death.
Nick Reiner was arrested the same day, several miles from the family home. He is expected to be formally arraigned, a legal process during which the charges will be read out and his constitutional rights explained. Defendants typically enter an initial plea at this stage, often pleading not guilty.
Speaking after an earlier court appearance, his lawyer, Alan Jackson, urged restraint in handling the case, describing it as a deeply painful family tragedy.
“This is a devastating event for the Reiner family,” Jackson said. “There are extremely complex and serious issues involved that must be examined carefully and respectfully.”
If convicted, Nick Reiner could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, although California rarely carries out capital punishment.
Investigators revealed that Nick Reiner lived in a guest house on his parents’ property and had attended a party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien with his parents on December 13. Some attendees reportedly described his behaviour that evening as erratic.
According to The New York Times, citing a source close to the family, the couple had plans to dine with former U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, the day after they were killed. They had also scheduled an in-home massage.
When the massage therapist received no response at the door, the couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, was contacted. She arrived at the home with a friend and found her father’s body, prompting an emergency call. Paramedics later confirmed that her mother was also found dead on the property.
Police later apprehended Nick Reiner that night.
Rob Reiner, the son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, first gained fame as an actor in the groundbreaking 1970s sitcom All in the Family, where he played Michael “Meathead” Stivic. He later became one of Hollywood’s most successful directors, with acclaimed films including This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, Stand by Me, and A Few Good Men, which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
