Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a move that further deepens the ongoing political realignment in the state.

The governor announced his decision in a resignation letter sent to the NNPP chairman of Diso–Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, stating that his exit from the party will take effect from Sunday, January 25, 2026.

According to a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, Governor Yusuf said his decision was driven by persistent internal crises within the party and his desire to safeguard the wider interests of the people of Kano State.

In the letter, Yusuf expressed appreciation to the NNPP for providing him with the platform to serve, noting that he remains grateful for the support he received from party leaders and members across the state since joining in 2022.

However, the governor explained that ongoing leadership disputes and unresolved legal battles within the party, both at the state and national levels, have continued to weaken its internal cohesion.

He said the prolonged disagreements have led to growing disenchantment among party members, widening divisions and creating uncertainty about the party’s future.

After what he described as careful reflection, Governor Yusuf said he concluded that stepping away from the NNPP was in the best interest of Kano State. He stressed that the decision was taken in good faith, without bitterness, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and development in the state.

In a major political development, the governor’s exit is being followed by the resignation of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen, all of whom are also leaving the NNPP.

The resignation letter was acknowledged by the party’s ward secretary, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who praised Governor Yusuf’s performance in areas such as infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.

Zubairu admitted that the party has been struggling with internal crises and said the NNPP had no choice but to accept the departure of what he described as one of the party’s most performing governors.
