The Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Saliu, has passed away at the age of 75, marking the end of an era in the religious life of the Ilorin Emirate and Kwara State at large.
The passing of the revered Islamic scholar was confirmed in a statement made available to TVC News on Monday, sending waves of sorrow across the Muslim community and beyond.
Born in Ilorin, Kwara State, Sheikh Saliu devoted his entire life to the study, teaching and practice of Islam. Through decades of learning, mentorship and spiritual service, he rose to become one of the most respected and influential religious leaders in the state.
He was appointed the 12th Chief Imam of the Ilorin Emirate in 1983, a sacred responsibility he carried with dedication and humility for more than four decades.
During this period, he provided spiritual guidance to generations of worshippers and played a key role in strengthening Islamic institutions within the emirate.
The late Chief Imam was widely admired for his deep understanding of Islamic teachings, his firm yet compassionate leadership, and his unwavering commitment to peace, unity and religious tolerance. His voice often served as a stabilising force, promoting harmony not only among Muslims but also within the wider society.
Details of his burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the Ilorin Emirate Council in due course.
