Real Madrid have officially dismissed Xabi Alonso as their head coach, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The decision was taken less than 24 hours after Los Blancos suffered a dramatic 3–2 defeat to fierce rivals Barcelona in the Supercopa final, a loss that further deepened concerns over the club’s direction this season.

Following the match, Alonso downplayed the significance of the Supercopa, describing it as “the least important” competition Real Madrid would contest this campaign. His comments reportedly did not sit well with the club’s hierarchy and sections of the fan base, especially given the high expectations that come with managing one of the world’s most successful clubs.

The former Spain international had been under mounting pressure in recent weeks, with Real Madrid struggling for consistency in LaLiga and failing to deliver convincing performances in the UEFA Champions League. Despite flashes of promise, the team’s results and overall play fell short of the club’s lofty standards.

Sources close to the club suggest that patience within the boardroom had run out, prompting swift action to prevent further setbacks. The timing of the decision is particularly striking, coming just two days before Madrid’s Copa del Rey Round of 16 encounter against Albacete.

Alonso, who was appointed with hopes of ushering in a new era at the club, departs amid growing uncertainty over who will take charge on an interim or permanent basis. Real Madrid are expected to announce further details regarding his replacement in the coming days as they attempt to steady the ship and salvage their season.
