The Kwara State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with a suspected arson attack on a residential building in Ilorin, following allegations that the incident was linked to religious differences.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, confirming that a full investigation had commenced into the fire incident, which occurred in the Isale Koko area of the state capital.

According to the police, the case was reported on January 2, 2026, at about 10pm by the occupant of the house, Mrs T. A. Olorisha. She alleged that her home was set ablaze by unknown persons on January 1, 2026, around 7pm, while she was away.

The police said they were aware of a video circulating on social media in which an elderly woman claimed her house was completely destroyed by fire. The statement noted that preliminary findings suggested the incident was a suspected case of arson.

Mrs Olorisha reportedly told the police that she had received threats in November 2025 from some individuals over religious differences, as she is a traditional worshipper. The suspects named in her complaint include Alhaji Salihu Saka (63), Alhaji Abubakar Salihu (58), and Alhaji Yekini Olohuntele (67).

“All three suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with the investigation,” the statement said.

The police added that no life was lost, as no one was inside the building at the time of the incident, while the value of the property destroyed has yet to be determined.

The command assured the public that efforts were ongoing to arrest other suspected perpetrators and that all allegations would be thoroughly investigated.

It also reiterated its commitment to protecting lives, property, and the fundamental rights of all residents, regardless of religious or cultural beliefs, urging members of the public to remain calm and provide useful information to aid the investigation.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that a traditional religion practitioner had accused residents of her Ilorin neighbourhood of setting her house ablaze after allegedly subjecting her to repeated threats over her faith.
