President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Chief Bisi Akande, elder statesman, former governor of Osun State and pioneer national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as he marks his 87th birthday on January 16, 2026.
In a statement on Friday, the President described Chief Akande as a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history whose life and service have greatly shaped the nation’s democratic journey.
According to Tinubu, Chief Akande’s contributions to national development and the institutionalisation of democracy remain enduring. Inspired by the political philosophy and progressive ideals of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Akande began his professional life as an accountant with British Petroleum before choosing a lifelong path of public service.
The President noted that Akande’s rise in public life was driven by competence and dedication. He served as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, later became Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and eventually governed Osun State between 1999 and 2003.
Tinubu also recalled Akande’s pivotal role in the formation of the APC, noting that as the party’s interim chairman, he laid a strong foundation for a political movement that made history in 2015 by defeating an incumbent federal government for the first time in Nigeria.
“Chief Akande’s leadership, industry, wisdom and selfless service have been invaluable to our party and our country,” the President said, adding that his contributions to Osun State, the nation and the progressive movement deserve lasting gratitude.
Describing Akande as a mentor and moral compass, Tinubu praised his integrity, honesty and unwavering commitment to values that strengthen the nation. He also acknowledged the personal support, guidance and encouragement he received from the elder statesman on his own political journey to the presidency.
The President further commended Akande’s continued support for his administration and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing his partnership as both reassuring and impactful.
Even at 87, Tinubu noted, Chief Akande remains energetic and resolute, standing firm as a passionate advocate for democracy, social justice and good governance.
“As he celebrates his 87th birthday, I pray for good health, renewed strength and many more years of purposeful service to the nation,” the President said.
