The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has scheduled January 7, 2026, to deliver its ruling on the bail applications filed by former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), alongside his wife, Bashir Asabe, and their son, Abubakar Abdulaziz.
Justice Emeka Nwite fixed the date on Friday after lawyers to both parties adopted their written submissions and presented oral arguments before the court. Malami and his family were represented by Joseph Daudu (SAN), while the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was represented by Ekele Iheanacho (SAN).
The trio are standing trial in a case marked FHC/ABJ/CR/700/2025, in which the EFCC accused them of money laundering. According to the anti-graft agency, Malami, his wife, and son are listed as the first, second, and third defendants respectively.
The EFCC alleged that the defendants were involved in multiple suspicious financial transactions and made efforts to conceal the illegal origin of billions of naira through several bank accounts and property purchases in Abuja, Kano, and Kebbi states.
Investigators further claimed that the alleged offences occurred between 2015 and 2025, a period that covers Malami’s time in office as Attorney-General during the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to the charge, the defendants allegedly conspired to disguise the source of the funds, acquire properties through indirect means, and retain proceeds they reportedly knew were linked to unlawful activities. These actions, the EFCC said, contravene provisions of the Money Laundering (Prohibition and Prevention) Acts of 2011 (as amended) and 2022.
The court is expected to determine whether the defendants will be granted bail when proceedings resume on January 7.
