The Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF) has applauded the appointment of Dr Olugbemisola Odusote as the first female Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, describing it as a historic breakthrough for legal education in the country.

President Bola Tinubu approved Odusote’s appointment on Tuesday, making her the first woman to head the institution since it was established in 1962.

In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by the Chairperson of the NBAWF, Huwaila Muhammad, the forum described the development as a defining moment not only for the Nigerian Law School but also for women in the legal profession nationwide.

According to the statement, Odusote’s emergence as Director-General demonstrates that excellence, dedication, and competence can overcome long-standing gender barriers within the legal sector.

The forum noted that her appointment goes beyond personal achievement, stressing that it sends a powerful message of hope and possibility to female lawyers and aspiring law students across the country.

“As the first woman to occupy this esteemed position, Dr Odusote has not only made history but has also opened new doors for countless women in law,” the statement said.

The NBAWF added that her appointment reinforces the call for greater inclusion of women in leadership roles within the legal ecosystem, while also inspiring ambition among young female professionals.

Expressing confidence in her leadership, the forum stated that it believes Odusote’s tenure will bring renewed vision, integrity, and progressive reforms that will further strengthen the Nigerian Law School and the legal profession at large.

The statement concluded by congratulating Odusote on what it described as a well-deserved achievement, calling her appointment “a true victory for women in law.”
