The Senator representing Kwara North Senatorial District, Sadiq Suleiman Umar, has denounced the recent bandit attacks on Rifun, Kakafu and Gbugbu communities in Patigi and Edu Local Government Areas of Kwara State, describing the incidents as barbaric and deeply troubling.
His reaction was contained in a statement shared via his X handle and sighted by The PUNCH on Monday.
The lawmaker expressed grief over the loss of lives and the distress suffered by residents following the attacks.
Suspected bandits had reportedly stormed Kakafu community in Patigi Local Government Area during a midnight operation, abducting four residents and leaving the community in shock. The incident was said to have occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday when armed men allegedly invaded the agrarian settlement, firing gunshots into the air and causing widespread panic.
Responding to the development, Umar stated, “I strongly condemn the recent bandit attack on Rifun, Kakafu, and Gbugbu communities of Patigi and Edu Local Government Areas. This incident is barbaric, unfortunate, and unacceptable.
“My heart goes out to the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragic incident. I pray for the quick rescue of those abducted and for comfort and strength for everyone affected.”
He emphasised that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority, urging security agencies to step up operations across the affected areas and the wider district to forestall further attacks.
“I call on the relevant security agencies to intensify operations in the affected areas and across the district.
“The perpetrators and their collaborators must be swiftly apprehended and brought to justice,” he said.
Umar also acknowledged the efforts of security personnel working to safeguard communities and encouraged stronger collaboration between residents and law enforcement to enhance intelligence gathering and rapid response.
He commended local vigilantes, forest guards and community members for their resilience and cooperation despite the challenges.
“I commend our local vigilantes, forest guards, and community members for their courage and cooperation.
“I will continue to engage with security agencies and government authorities to strengthen surveillance, improve response mechanisms, and provide necessary support for affected communities,” he added.
The senator reassured residents of Rifun, Kakafu, Gbugbu and the entire Kwara North Senatorial District of his continued commitment to their welfare and the restoration of peace, urging them to remain calm, vigilant and proactive in sharing credible information with security authorities
