Ademola-Lookman-Scores-On-Atletico-Debut-With-Stunning-Goal-Against-Betis

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has drawn level with a record set by Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez at Atlético Madrid after netting his fourth goal for the club in Saturday’s 4–2 victory over RCD Espanyol.

The Nigerian attacker, who recently found the net against Club Brugge KV in the UEFA Champions League, retained his place in Diego Simeone’s starting lineup at the Estadio Metropolitano and once again made his mark.

Despite going into the encounter as favourites, Atlético were stunned early when Espanyol took the lead just six minutes into the match through Jofre. The hosts responded in the 21st minute, with Alexander Sørloth restoring parity to ensure the teams went into the break level.

Four minutes after the restart, Álex Baena fired Atlético ahead to make it 2–1. Lookman then extended the lead in the 58th minute, reacting sharply to a flick-on from Sørloth at a corner and powering home a flying header for his first goal in LaLiga.

Sørloth completed his brace in the 72nd minute, heading in a cross from Matteo Ruggeri to seal Atlético’s fourth goal. Although Espanyol pulled one back late on, it was not enough to deny the home side all three points.

Lookman featured for 60 minutes and delivered another standout display, taking his tally to four goals in six appearances across all competitions, alongside six assists.

Statistics platform OptaJose noted that no player since Luis Suárez has enjoyed such a prolific start to life at Atlético. Suárez achieved the same feat during the 2020/21 campaign after joining from Barcelona, a season that ended with Atlético lifting the LaLiga title.

With momentum building, Lookman will now turn his attention to Atlético’s crucial Champions League knockout play-off clash against Club Brugge, as he looks to continue his impressive start in Spanish football.
