The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has intercepted 64 bags of cannabis sativa hidden inside a trailer transporting cement along the Kano–Zaria Road.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics Sadiq Maigatari, disclosed that the consignment was recovered on February 2, 2026. The operation was carried out by officers attached to the Kiru Area Command following intelligence-led surveillance and sustained monitoring.

“The trailer, loaded with Dangote Cement, departed Obajana in Kogi State and was en route to Mubi in Adamawa State when it was stopped along the Zaria–Kano Road.

“The driver has been arrested and is currently in NDLEA custody pending further investigation”, the statement partly read.

Commenting on the development, the NDLEA Kano State Commander, D.Y. Lawal, said the seizure was made possible through meticulous intelligence gathering and the commitment of operatives.

He noted that the illicit drugs were concealed within legitimate cargo and were suspected to have been intended for distribution in Kano ahead of the Ramadan period.

“We will not allow drug traffickers to endanger the safety and spiritual well-being of our communities,” he said.

The command stated that, in line with directives from the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Mohamed Buba Marwa, it would intensify patrols, strengthen checkpoints and sustain intelligence-driven operations across the state.

According to the agency, investigations are ongoing to dismantle the network behind the shipment, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend all collaborators. It assured that anyone found culpable would face prosecution in accordance with the law.

The NDLEA also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities related to drug trafficking to the nearest NDLEA office or through official communication channels.

“Continued community cooperation is essential to protect citizens and preserve the peace and sanctity of communal and religious observances,” the statement added.
