Former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has lauded Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for what he described as purposeful and people-oriented leadership that is repositioning the state for sustainable growth and prosperity.
Osinbajo made the remarks on Wednesday during a visit to the governor, which coincided with Otti’s birthday. He commended the governor’s performance in office, stressing that the true value of public service lies in positively impacting citizens’ lives.
“I am extremely proud of the work you have done so far. You have lived up to expectations — not only to the people but also to your friends and associates. In the short time I have been here, I have seen tangible evidence of progress,” the former Vice President said.
He particularly praised Otti’s social welfare initiatives, especially the assent to the Senior Citizens’ Law, describing it as a compassionate and socially responsible reform. According to him, effective welfare systems are anchored on care for vulnerable members of society.
Osinbajo also commended the administration’s extensive road rehabilitation and improved connectivity across Abia State, noting that the projects stand as clear indicators of results-driven governance.
Reflecting on leadership, he observed that while many seek public office, genuine distinction lies in fulfilling promises.
“Sometimes you wonder whether, after all the efforts to get into office, leaders are able to fulfil their promises.
“But in your case, you have done not just what you promised, but even more. You have made public service worthwhile,” he added.
He further prayed for renewed strength, wisdom and divine favour for the governor as he continues to steer the affairs of the state.
In his response, Otti described Osinbajo as a brother, friend and mentor, expressing appreciation for the visit.
The governor clarified that the occasion was not intended as a formal birthday celebration, explaining that he rarely marks such events publicly while in office.
He thanked those who attended voluntarily and reiterated his preference for modesty and dedication to service.
Otti expressed gratitude to God for the progress recorded within 32 months of his administration, describing the achievements as modest but impactful. He maintained that governance must prioritise citizens’ welfare and security.
“Governance is about the people — their welfare, their safety and their peace of mind. If you enter office for any other reason, you miss the essence of leadership,” Otti said.
He recalled that during the administration’s first month, certain local governments were under the control of non-state actors, but swift action was taken to restore order and secure affected communities.
The governor also acknowledged the efforts of security agencies in sustaining peace and stability across the state.
“We are grateful to the men and women who stay awake so that our people can sleep in peace,” he said.
Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Emmanuel Meribole, conveyed birthday wishes on behalf of the State Executive Council, praying for continued strength and success for the governor.
Representatives of financial institutions, including Access Bank, First Bank and UBA, also commended Otti’s leadership style, describing his administration as a model of ethical and effective governance. They offered prayers for good health and wisdom as he continues to advance his agenda for the state.
