The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has commenced an investigation into a daycare centre associated with the mother of Afrobeats singer, Simisola Kosoko, following viral social media posts that stirred renewed controversy around the artiste.
In separate statements shared on Friday via its official X handle, the agency disclosed that its Director-General, Binta Adamu Bello, ordered a comprehensive probe into allegations of child molestation and abuse in a Lagos daycare facility, as inferred from suggestive online posts linked to the singer.
NAPTIP stated that it was committed to thoroughly investigating all credible reports relating to alleged sexual abuse or misconduct in daycare settings. The agency called on individuals with factual information, evidence, or direct knowledge of the incidents referenced in the viral posts to come forward confidentially.
The development follows intensified backlash against the “Duduke” crooner after old tweets from between 2012 and 2014 resurfaced online.
The controversy began when Simi took to social media to condemn sexual violence and advocate for rape victims. She wrote that nearly every woman she knows has experienced sexual assault and urged men to confront what she described as a culture of silence and denial. She also argued that speaking out against offenders should not be dismissed simply because some allegations may later prove false.
As her comments gained widespread attention, social media users dug up past posts in which she made remarks involving children. In one tweet, she referenced a four-year-old boy in a manner that drew criticism. In another, she expressed affection for children at her mother’s daycare, describing them as adorable and saying she loved kissing them.
The resurfaced tweets sparked outrage, with some critics accusing the singer of hypocrisy. Rather than issue a direct apology, Simi insisted her advocacy against rape was genuine and not performative. She disclosed that members of her team had deleted some of the old posts due to their sensitive nature, particularly because they involved her family.
She maintained that she had consistently spoken out against rape and sexual assault long before attaining fame, acknowledging she is not perfect but standing firmly by her call to end sexual violence.
Amid the growing online debate, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency urged the Ogun State Government to carry out a preliminary investigation into issues connected to the resurfaced posts.
The matter continues to generate widespread discussion across social media platforms.
