The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Monday urged newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General of Police to demonstrate discipline, integrity and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
Disu gave the charge during the decoration ceremony held at the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja, where the senior officers were formally decorated with their new ranks.
Speaking at the event, the police chief said the elevation to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General goes beyond the wearing of new insignia, describing it as recognition of years of dedicated service and a call to greater responsibility in leading the force.
According to him, the rank represents one of the highest levels of professional trust within the police hierarchy and requires wisdom, courage and a deep commitment to justice and public service.
“As members of the top strategic leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, you are now entrusted with responsibilities that go beyond operational command,” he said.
“You are expected to provide institutional direction, strengthen internal discipline, drive reforms and ensure that our policing strategies remain responsive to the evolving security landscape of our nation.”
The IGP noted that the security environment in the country has become increasingly complex, with threats ranging from organised crime and cyber-enabled offences to violent criminal networks.
He therefore urged the officers to leverage their experience to strengthen intelligence-driven policing, improve collaboration among security agencies and enhance operational coordination across police commands.
Disu stressed that the expectations placed on the police are higher than ever, making it necessary for the leadership of the force to remain strategic, forward-thinking and firmly committed to professionalism.
He added that the roles of the newly promoted DIGs would be crucial to ongoing efforts to reposition the police into a more professional, technologically driven and citizen-focused institution.
Earlier, the Police Service Commission had approved the promotion of several Assistant Inspectors-General of Police to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General.
The newly decorated DIGs include Zachariah Achinyan, Zango Baba, Isyaku Mohammed, Margaret Challa, Mohammed Sulaiman, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, Fayode Mustapha and Umar Nadada.
