The escalating conflict in the Middle East is now having a ripple effect on international sport, raising tough questions about the future of next summer’s 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Iran, one of the 48 nations that qualified for the tournament, now faces serious uncertainty about whether it will travel to the United States for its group-stage matches. The turmoil followed recent US-Israeli military strikes on Iranian territory and Iran’s own retaliatory actions across the region, which have sparked political tensions and safety concerns far beyond the battlefield.

Iran had secured its place by topping its Asian qualifying group and was drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand, with all fixtures scheduled in Los Angeles and Seattle.

However, Iranian football officials have openly acknowledged that the crisis has clouded their World Cup ambitions, admitting the situation “does not augur well” for their participation.

The logistical and diplomatic challenges are significant. Heightened regional instability has disrupted international travel routes and complicated visa arrangements for Iranian players, staff and fans heading to the United States.

Some reports suggest that airspace closures and cancelled flights could affect fans and teams moving between key tournament hubs.

FIFA, the sport’s governing body, has not confirmed any change to the tournament schedule, but rules do allow it to replace a withdrawing team if necessary. Should Iran pull out, teams such as Iraq or the United Arab Emirates, the next highest-ranked Asian sides from the qualifying phase could be considered as replacements to maintain the full 48-team format.

With just months to go before kick-off, the situation remains fluid. While global football fans hope for a peaceful resolution that keeps all qualified teams in the competition, the crisis highlights how geopolitics can intersect unexpectedly with the world’s biggest sporting event.
