The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has signed a 45-year sub-concession agreement with Nigerdock to develop, operate and maintain an exclusive container terminal within Snake Island Port.
The Chief Marketing Officer of Nigerdock, Kevin Johnson-Azuara, disclosed this in a statement obtained on Thursday, noting that the facility will occupy 30 hectares within the port.
According to the statement, the new terminal is expected to be completed by 2028 and will feature a 910-metre quay, six ship-to-shore cranes, two ship berths, three barge berths and a draft depth of up to 18 metres.
Speaking on the partnership, the Chief Executive Officer of Nigerdock, Maher Jarmakani, described the project as a major step forward in the company’s collaboration with MSC.
“We are thrilled to take this step forward in our partnership with MSC to develop a world-class container terminal within Snake Island Port. This gives the world’s leading shipping line a home in Nigeria and brings significant foreign direct investment into the country to accelerate growth in the maritime and logistics industry,” he said.
Also commenting on the project, the President of MSC, Diego Aponte, said the agreement highlights the group’s long-term commitment to the Nigerian market.
“Completing this key phase in the development of Snake Island Container Terminal with Nigerdock and our trusted partners demonstrates MSC Group’s commitment to providing excellent service to our customers in Nigeria and throughout Africa,” he said.
Aponte added that the facility would improve operational efficiency and position the port as a significant global shipping hub.
“The new terminal will open up opportunities, enhance efficiency and elevate Snake Island Port as a major global shipping centre. Together with our Group’s other long-term investments in Nigeria, it will generate many local jobs and significantly increase economic revenue and resilience,” he stated.
Snake Island Port, an 85-hectare facility operated by Nigerdock in Lagos, currently consists of three terminals that have expanded the capacity of the city’s port operations.
Nigerdock operates an integrated port and free zone in Lagos, supporting global trade with the African market.
