As political campaigns are set to commence on March 11, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on political parties in Osun State to prioritise issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Musa Olurode, the commission revealed that the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, made the appeal during a stakeholders’ meeting held ahead of the official commencement of electioneering activities. He emphasised the importance of constructive debates centred on policies and development programmes that would enlighten voters about candidates’ plans, rather than resorting to personal attacks or inflammatory remarks.

According to the statement, the meeting brought together representatives of political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, the media, and other key stakeholders. It was convened to strengthen collective commitment to ensuring a credible, transparent, and peaceful electoral process.

Agboke noted that all stakeholders share a common responsibility in delivering a successful election, stressing that the credibility of the August 15, 2026 governorship poll depends not only on INEC but also on the conduct of political parties, candidates, supporters, security agencies, and the electorate.

“The success of the electoral process depends not only on INEC but also on the responsible conduct of political parties, candidates, supporters, security agencies, and the electorate at large,” he said.

He further highlighted the need for every stakeholder to discharge their duties responsibly to safeguard a democratic process that truly reflects the will of the people of Osun State. Political actors, he added, must operate within the confines of the law and focus their campaigns on issues that matter to voters.

Olurode also reiterated the REC’s position that the primary purpose of political rallies is to educate voters on candidates’ policies, aspirations, and governance plans. He warned against using campaign platforms to spread misinformation, incite violence, or threaten public peace.

The commission assured stakeholders of its preparedness to conduct the election in strict compliance with the Electoral Act and other relevant guidelines.
