The Nigerian Presidency has debunked a viral social media post claiming that Donald Trump criticised Bola Tinubu over the recent security situation in the North-East.
The controversial post, which circulated widely online, purported to show Trump condemning Tinubu’s handling of terrorist attacks in Borno State and questioning his ongoing state visit to the United Kingdom.
However, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, swiftly dismissed the claim, describing the screenshot as completely false.
Taking to social media on Tuesday, Dare simply labelled the post “Fake!!!” while sharing the doctored image to counter the misinformation.
The alleged tweet had painted a grim picture of the situation in Nigeria, referencing recent bombings in Maiduguri and accusing the President of being absent during a national crisis. It also suggested that the UK Prime Minister should urge Tinubu to return home immediately.
But checks showed that no such statement exists on any verified Trump platforms, including his official social media accounts or White House channels.
The clarification comes amid renewed security concerns in Borno State, where coordinated suicide bombings recently targeted busy locations, leaving several people dead and many others injured.
Reacting to the attacks earlier, Tinubu described the incidents as deeply disturbing and blamed them on desperate terrorist groups under pressure from Nigerian security forces. He also reassured citizens that his administration remains committed to defeating insurgency and restoring peace.
The Presidency’s response highlights growing concerns over the spread of misinformation online, especially during periods of heightened national tension.
