The Rivers State House of Assembly has acknowledged receipt of a list of commissioner-nominees submitted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara and has invited nine of them for screening and confirmation.

The names were forwarded to the Assembly led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule for consideration as members of the State Executive Council.

The submission came about three weeks after the governor dismissed eight commissioners who were unaffected by the Supreme Court ruling that recognised Amaewhule as the authentic Speaker of the House. Fubara also relieved all Special Advisers of their duties.

In a special government announcement dated March 3 and signed by the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi, the Assembly directed the nominees to submit 40 copies of their curriculum vitae, photocopies of their credentials, and proof of tax compliance.

Those invited for screening are Professor Datonye Alasia, Mr Tonye Bellgam, Professor Temple Nwofor, Dr Peters Nwagor, Mrs Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, Mr Lekue Kenneth, Otonye Amachree and Amairigha Edward Hart.

All required documents are to be submitted to the Office of the Clerk at the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters.

Notably, none of the recently removed commissioners appeared on the new list submitted to lawmakers.

Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, are believed to have resolved their political differences following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu had earlier stepped in to halt impeachment proceedings initiated against the governor and his deputy by 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike. In line with agreements reached after the President’s intervention, Speaker Amaewhule announced the withdrawal of the impeachment notice against both officials.

Additional nominees are expected, as Rivers State comprises 23 local government areas.
