President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who plan to contest in the 2027 general elections to step down from their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive affects a wide range of officials, including ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal aides, as well as directors-general and chief executives of federal agencies, parastatals, commissions, and government-owned companies.
The order was conveyed in a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and signed by George Akume. It was released in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable for party primaries published by the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to the circular, all affected appointees must formally submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office no later than the deadline.
The presidency explained that the move is aimed at ensuring strict compliance with electoral laws, preventing abuse of office, and guaranteeing a fair and transparent political process for all aspirants.
President Tinubu also urged those concerned to comply without delay, stressing that the decision reflects his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible elections in Nigeria.
The directive comes as political activities begin to gather momentum following the release of the electoral timetable by INEC, with preparations for the 2027 general elections already underway.
