Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was announced on Monday after a closed-door meeting at the Lagos House in Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the governorship before members of the State Executive Council and key party stakeholders.
Also present at the meeting were members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, among other political figures.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the decision as a unanimous agreement among stakeholders, noting that Hamzat possesses the experience and capacity required to lead the state.
“We have just received the deputy governor, who came with a strong delegation of leaders to formally inform us of his ambition. It was a unanimous decision that he is well-prepared and capable for the job,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu praised Hamzat’s performance over the past seven years, highlighting his integrity, loyalty, and commitment to governance as key strengths.
“He has worked with me at the highest level of dedication and support. I feel honoured that he chose to formally inform me,” he added.
The governor also acknowledged the role of President Bola Tinubu in shaping their political journey, noting that his leadership helped foster their working relationship.
Describing his deputy as “ready from day one,” Sanwo-Olu said Hamzat has been groomed for leadership and deserves the opportunity to govern Lagos State.
He further explained that the endorsement followed extensive consultations among party leaders and government officials, characterising the meeting as a “family discussion” that ended in broad consensus.
The development signals early political alignment within the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.
