Dikko Rada Urge Calm as Bandit Demands Cattle, Sheep in Katsina Community

Residents of several communities in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State have been thrown into fear following reports that suspected bandits issued a six-day ultimatum demanding 700 cattle and 1,000 sheep.

The threat, reportedly delivered through a letter circulated in affected villages on Thursday, has triggered a wave of displacement, with many residents fleeing their homes to avoid possible attacks.

A local resident, who spoke anonymously, said the ultimatum came after months of harassment, kidnappings, and violence allegedly carried out by armed groups in the area. He identified a bandit leader known as Muhammadu as being behind the latest development.

According to the source, the bandit leader had earlier fallen out with his associates and moved a large number of rustled animals reportedly about 1,700 into Rimaye town, using a convoy of motorcycles.

“Shortly after that, he demanded the same number of animals from our communities as tax,” the resident said. “He sent a message to Sukuntuni town, insisting the payment must be made within six days or the entire community would be attacked.”

Communities including Sukuntuni, Unguwar Tsamiya, Magama, Walawa, and Tudun Wulli have been heavily affected, with reports indicating that armed men have been moving freely in the area. The situation has forced residents to seek refuge in safer locations, including parts of Kano State and Katsina town, while some have relocated to nearby Rimaye. It is estimated that about 10 villages have been abandoned.

The resident also recalled previous attacks in nearby areas, including Sayaya, where a hospital was reportedly burnt, a police officer and several civilians killed, and vehicles destroyed.
Reacting to the development, Chairman of Civil Society Organisations in the state, Abdurrahman Abdullahi, blamed the worsening insecurity on what he described as the government’s failure to decisively tackle the crisis.

He noted that while past negotiations between communities and armed groups had provided temporary relief, such efforts are no longer effective.
However, the Katsina State Government, under Governor Dikko Radda, has urged residents to remain calm, stating that the reported letter is still under investigation.

The Director General of Media to the Governor, Maiwada Dammalla, said authorities have yet to officially confirm the authenticity of the message and suggested it may have been intended to create panic.

“The government is working tirelessly to protect lives and property,” he assured.
Despite these assurances, tension remains high across the affected communities, as displaced residents remain uncertain about when it will be safe to return home.
