The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, has cautioned officers against searching citizens’ mobile phones, stressing that such actions are not permitted under current policing guidelines.

Speaking in a video shared by News Central TV on Tuesday, Fatai emphasised the need for professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights during police operations. He noted that officers who act within the law have nothing to fear from being recorded, adding that accountability applies to both the police and the public.

He stated that members of the public are free to record officers on duty, just as officers can also document interactions, provided all actions remain lawful.

The police chief reiterated that personnel have been clearly instructed to avoid searching phones and instead focus on their core responsibility of inspecting vehicles.

Fatai explained that such checks are aimed at identifying passengers and ensuring they do not board vehicles operated by criminals, noting that the measure is intended to protect commuters from falling victim to hoodlums who may take them to unsafe destinations.
