The Independent National Electoral Commission has directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) across the country to suspend ongoing publicity and arrangements for the planned voter revalidation exercise.
The directive was conveyed in a letter dated April 4, 2026, and signed by the commission’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.
According to the notice, while RECs are to pause all public announcements and logistics tied to the exercise, they are still expected to continue internal preparations. These include mobilising personnel and getting the commission’s voter enrolment devices ready.
“RECs are also directed to step down all publicity and arrangements for the voter revalidation exercise and await further directives from the commission,” the letter stated.
The development comes just days after INEC announced plans to launch a nationwide voter revalidation drive on April 13, 2026, aimed at updating the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a related update, the commission also announced a change in the format of its upcoming meeting with RECs. The meeting, initially scheduled to hold physically on Thursday, April 9, will now take place virtually.
The notice, issued on behalf of INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, confirmed that the session will be conducted via Zoom at 11:00 a.m.
RECs have been advised to remain in their respective states and await further details, including login credentials for the virtual meeting.
INEC apologised for any inconvenience caused by the sudden changes, adding that further directives on the voter revalidation exercise will be communicated in due course.
