Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has described his endorsement by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as a strong vote of confidence in his leadership capacity ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Sanwo-Olu had earlier on Monday publicly backed Hamzat as his preferred successor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State.
The endorsement followed a closed-door meeting at the Lagos House in Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to run for governor before members of the State Executive Council and key party stakeholders.
Top political figures, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, were also in attendance alongside members of the influential Governor’s Advisory Council.
Reacting in a message shared online, Hamzat expressed appreciation for the governor’s support, describing it as both humbling and motivating.
He said the endorsement reflects the trust built through years of collaboration in governance, adding that he remains committed to sustaining and improving on the progress recorded in the state.
“I am honoured by the endorsement of my governor, my brother and my friend,” he said, pledging to serve Lagos residents with integrity, focus, and a clear sense of purpose if given the opportunity.
Hamzat is one of several aspirants seeking the governorship ticket, alongside figures such as Abdul-Azeez Adediran and Samuel Ajose, who have also begun consultations.
Political observers say the endorsement could strengthen Hamzat’s chances of emerging as the APC’s consensus candidate, especially following earlier backing from prominent party leaders including Femi Gbajabiamila and former governor Babatunde Fashola.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the decision as unanimous, noting that party leaders and government officials agreed Hamzat is well-prepared to lead the state.
According to the governor, Hamzat’s years of experience, loyalty, and commitment in office have positioned him as a capable successor.
He also acknowledged the role of President Bola Tinubu in shaping the leadership journey of both himself and Hamzat, describing the moment as a reflection of long-standing political vision.
Sanwo-Olu concluded that the endorsement was the outcome of extensive consultations, adding that stakeholders were united in their belief that Hamzat is ready to take on the responsibility of governing Lagos State.
The development signals early political alignment within the APC in Lagos as preparations gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
