Veteran midfielder James Milner has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, ending one of the longest and most remarkable careers in English football history.
The former Liverpool FC, Manchester City FC and Brighton & Hove Albion FC star leaves the game as the all-time leading appearance maker in the Premier League, having played a record 658 matches across 24 seasons.
Milner surpassed the previous record of 653 appearances held by Gareth Barry earlier this year, further cementing his legacy as one of the league’s most durable and consistent players.
The former England international enjoyed a distinguished career with several top-flight clubs, including Leeds United FC, Newcastle United FC, Aston Villa FC, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton.
Confirming his decision to retire, Milner said the time was right to step away from the game after nearly a quarter of a century in the Premier League.
“After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career,” he said.
Reflecting on his journey, Milner recalled making his senior debut for Leeds United at just 16 years old and becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at the time.
He admitted that he never imagined the path his career would take, from his breakthrough years at Leeds to helping Brighton secure European qualification for only the second time in the club’s history at the age of 40.
Milner described it as a privilege to have represented some of England’s biggest clubs, while also cherishing a memorable loan spell with Swindon Town FC earlier in his career.
Throughout his playing days, he experienced both the struggles of relegation battles and the joy of winning major trophies, competing in European competitions and representing his country on the international stage.
The midfielder paid special tribute to his family, thanking them for their sacrifices, support and encouragement throughout his football journey.
“I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life,” Milner said. “Football has given me far more than I could ever have imagined, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it provided.”
