The Committee of Past Presidents of the Ilobu Asake Development Union has strongly condemned the recent violent incident in Ilobu, Osun State, which resulted in the death of a teenager during political activities in the community.
In a statement issued by the committee, members expressed shock, sadness, and concern over the development, describing the incident as a tragic loss that should serve as a wake-up call to all stakeholders.
The group condemned all forms of violence, intimidation, thuggery, and lawlessness, stressing that no political ambition or contest should come at the cost of human life.
According to the committee, the death of the young resident represents not only a painful loss to the bereaved family but also a setback for the entire Ilobu community.
The leaders extended condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for strength and comfort for them during the difficult period.
The committee emphasised that politics should remain a platform for ideas, public service, and healthy competition rather than becoming an avenue for hostility and bloodshed.
It warned that while elections and political contests are temporary, the consequences of violence often leave lasting effects on families and communities.
The former presidents therefore called on political actors, supporters, youth groups, and all stakeholders in Ilobu to exercise restraint and embrace dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.
They stressed that as indigenes of Ilobu, residents have a shared responsibility to preserve the peace, unity, and reputation of the town and should not allow political differences to weaken longstanding communal relationships.
The committee further appealed to current and aspiring political leaders to prioritise the collective interest of Ilobu above personal ambitions and political gains.
According to the statement, sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace, warning that insecurity and conflict remain obstacles to economic and social progress.
The group also urged security agencies and relevant authorities to carry out a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the incident and ensure that justice is served in accordance with the law.
“Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done,” the committee stated.
Calling for calm, the committee appealed to residents of Ilobu to remain law-abiding and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions.
It encouraged community members to reject violence, promote understanding, and work collectively towards building a peaceful, united, and prosperous Ilobu.
The statement concluded with prayers for peace in the community and wisdom for leaders at all levels.
