Although the 2025/26 Premier League season has come to an end, clubs, players and supporters are already turning their attention to what promises to be one of the busiest summers in recent years.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup, transfer activities, fixture announcements, pre-season tours and European competitions all lined up, there will be little time for English football to slow down before the new campaign begins.
According to information published on the Premier League’s official website, preparations for the 2026/27 season will officially get underway this month with the league’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The meeting will welcome newly promoted sides Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City into the Premier League following their successful Championship campaigns. The three clubs replace Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and West Ham United, who were relegated at the end of last season.
Attention will soon shift to North America, where the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11 across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The tournament, which runs until July 19, is expected to feature a large number of Premier League stars representing their countries. Host nation Mexico will open the competition against South Africa in Mexico City.
While the World Cup dominates global headlines, Premier League clubs will remain busy in the transfer market. The summer transfer window officially opens on June 15, allowing teams to strengthen their squads ahead of the new season.
Fans will then get a clearer picture of what lies ahead when the full Premier League fixtures for the 2026/27 season are released on June 19. All 380 matches will be announced simultaneously, enabling clubs and supporters to begin planning for the campaign.
One of the most anticipated returns will be that of Coventry City, who are back in the top flight for the first time since the 2000/01 season after securing promotion under former England midfielder Frank Lampard.
As the World Cup progresses towards its conclusion, players not involved in the tournament will start reporting back for pre-season training in early July.
The build-up to the new season will intensify with a series of international tours and friendly matches. Manchester United are set to face Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18, while Liverpool will travel to the United States for their pre-season schedule. Chelsea, meanwhile, are expected to take on Tottenham Hotspur in Australia.
The first domestic trophy of the season will be up for grabs on August 16 when Premier League champions Arsenal meet FA Cup winners Manchester City in the Community Shield.
However, due to scheduling commitments at Wembley Stadium, the traditional curtain-raiser will take place at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.
European football will also return quickly. Aston Villa have already secured a place in the UEFA Super Cup, where they could face Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. Brighton & Hove Albion, meanwhile, will begin their UEFA Conference League campaign in the playoff round later in August.
The new Premier League season is scheduled to kick off on August 22, a week later than usual to accommodate the World Cup calendar.
League organisers say the adjusted schedule provides players with an 89-day break between seasons and a 33-day gap between the World Cup final and the opening weekend of the new campaign.
The summer transfer window will finally shut on September 1, by which time clubs will have already played two league matches.
With major tournaments, transfer drama, pre-season tours and the start of another Premier League title race all packed into a few short months, football fans can expect a thrilling summer before the 2026/27 season gets fully underway.
