Popular Afrobeats star David Adeleke, also known as Davido, has defended his decision to spotlight Nigeria’s insecurity crisis on a global stage, insisting that citizens should not remain silent in the face of worsening security challenges.
The singer’s comments came in response to criticism from a notable Hausa musician Dauda Rarara over Davido’s appearance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles.
Davido had performed at the event wearing a customised jacket carrying the message “Bring Them Home” alongside the names of more than 40 schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15.
Reacting in a video posted on his verified Facebook page, Rarara criticised the gesture, describing it as inappropriate and arguing that taking internal security concerns to an international audience could damage Nigeria’s image.
According to him, issues relating to insecurity should be handled with caution rather than amplified globally.
“How can you promote terrorism-related issues to the whole world? How can you project a sensitive national security issue in a way that damages the country’s image?” Rarara asked.
The singer also questioned whether political interests influenced Davido’s action, suggesting that insecurity should not become a campaign issue.
Rarara further argued that many citizens may not fully understand the circumstances surrounding security operations and warned against what he described as the internationalisation of domestic challenges.
The remarks triggered an exchange between both entertainers on social media.
Davido initially responded briefly on X with a mocking remark directed at Rarara before later issuing a stronger statement defending his position.
In a follow-up message shared in Hausa and translated into English, Davido said patriotism requires citizens to speak openly about insecurity and not discourage others from doing the same.
According to him, remaining silent while communities suffer is not an act of patriotism.
“Every Nigerian should not stay silent about the insecurity affecting the country and should not stop others from expressing concern,” Davido stated.
He added that placing political interests above national welfare weakens efforts to address critical issues affecting ordinary citizens.
The singer urged Nigerians to prioritise truth, national interest and accountability over political loyalty.
The exchange has since generated widespread reactions online, with supporters divided over whether Davido’s World Cup advocacy was an important humanitarian message or an action that projected the country negatively on the international stage.
Neither side showed signs of backing down as discussions around celebrity activism, national image and insecurity continue to dominate public conversation.
