Former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has announced that a special prayer and remembrance gathering will be held on Monday, July 13, to mark the first anniversary of the death of Nigeria’s late former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
Ahmad made the announcement in a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday, describing the event as an opportunity to honour Buhari’s life, legacy and years of dedicated service to the nation.
According to him, the remembrance programme will bring together members of Buhari’s family, friends, former aides, political associates and supporters for prayers and reflection.
He described the late former president as a leader who served Nigeria with commitment, integrity, discipline and patriotism, noting that his contributions to national development would continue to occupy a significant place in the country’s history.
Ahmad said participants would offer prayers for Allah to forgive Buhari’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus and continue to comfort his family and the nation.
“May Allah grant him eternal rest. Ameen,” the statement read.
Muhammadu Buhari died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness at a London clinic. His remains were subsequently flown back to Nigeria, where he was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023. His victory in the 2015 presidential election marked a historic moment in the country’s democratic journey, making him the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting president. He was re-elected in 2019 and completed his second and final term in office in 2023.
The first anniversary remembrance is expected to provide an opportunity for family members, former aides, political associates and supporters to reflect on Buhari’s leadership, public service and lasting contributions to Nigeria’s political history.
