The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, identified as Joro Jarkata, over alleged involvement in supplying ammunition to bandits in Guma Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondona, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Makurdi on Friday.

According to Aondona, the suspect was arrested during a proactive operation carried out by operatives of the Guma Police Division on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

He explained that police officers were conducting a routine stop-and-search operation when they intercepted two men riding on a motorcycle. On sighting the operatives, one of the occupants reportedly jumped off the motorcycle and fled into a nearby bush.

Aondona said the second suspect was immediately apprehended.

“The remaining suspect, identified as Joro Jarkata, a 20-year-old male from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, was apprehended.

“A search conducted on him led to the recovery of one hundred and fifteen (115) rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition concealed in his possession,” the statement read in part.

The police spokesperson said the suspect is currently in custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Makurdi for further investigation.

He added that efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing accomplice and determine the source, intended destination and circumstances surrounding the transportation of the ammunition.

Aondona further stated that the Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the vigilance, professionalism and alertness of the officers whose prompt action led to the recovery of the ammunition.

He said the Commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms and ammunition, as well as dismantling criminal networks threatening the peace and security of Benue State.

The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police formation.
