Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Tuesday paid glowing tribute to his late predecessor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, describing him as a courageous statesman, mentor and visionary leader whose legacy continues to shape the state’s development.
The governor made the remarks in a personally signed statement to commemorate what would have been Akeredolu’s 70th birthday.
Aiyedatiwa joined the late governor’s family, the people of Ondo State and admirers across the country in celebrating the life and lasting contributions of the former governor, whose administration was widely recognised for its bold leadership, commitment to justice and passion for the progress of the Sunshine State.
Reflecting on Akeredolu’s leadership, the governor said the late former governor governed with courage, conviction and an unwavering sense of duty, leaving behind a legacy that would continue to inspire future generations.
“He was a man who led with uncommon boldness, defended justice without compromise, and dedicated himself to the service of our dear state and nation,” Aiyedatiwa said.
The governor also recalled his years of service under Akeredolu, describing the late governor as a leader who believed in him, entrusted him with responsibilities and prepared him for higher service.
According to him, the confidence reposed in him by Akeredolu, as well as the mentorship and guidance he received while serving as deputy governor, have remained invaluable lessons that continue to influence his style of leadership and commitment to public service.
Aiyedatiwa said his administration remains committed to preserving and advancing the developmental vision initiated by his predecessor, stressing that continuing Akeredolu’s legacy is both a responsibility and a personal commitment born out of loyalty and gratitude.
“I remain profoundly grateful for the opportunity to have served alongside him. His confidence in me, guidance and the responsibilities he entrusted to me remain enduring lessons that continue to shape my approach to leadership and public service.
“As we honour his memory today, I reaffirm my commitment to building on the foundation he laid and to sustaining the vision of a safer, stronger and more prosperous Ondo State for the benefit of all our people,” he said.
The governor prayed for the peaceful repose of Akeredolu’s soul and asked God to continue to comfort his family and all those who cherish his memory.
He concluded by saying that although the former governor is no longer alive, his impact on Ondo State and Nigeria remains indelible.
“On this 70th posthumous birthday anniversary, I pray that Almighty God continues to grant him eternal rest and comfort his family and all who continue to cherish his memory. Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, your legacy lives on,” the governor added.
