Veteran Nigerian poet, writer and master of Yoruba oral literature, Chief Alabi Ogundepo, has died at the age of 84.
Ogundepo, a native of Saki, Oyo State, reportedly died on Monday, August 24, 2026. His death was announced by his family in a statement signed by Dupe Ogundepo-Falana.
The late literary icon was renowned for his mastery of Ijala, the traditional Yoruba hunters’ poetry, and devoted much of his life to preserving and promoting Yoruba language, culture, history and traditions.
Through his poetry, writings and public performances, Ogundepo helped keep the rich tradition of Yoruba oral literature alive, passing cultural knowledge and values from one generation to another.
Beyond his work as a poet, he was also celebrated as a writer, cultural enthusiast and performer whose words often reflected the history, identity and experiences of the Yoruba people.
His family described him as a remarkable literary voice whose contributions to Nigerian literature and cultural preservation would continue to inspire generations.
“Through his creative works and public engagements, he contributed significantly to the preservation and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of his people,” the family said.
Ogundepo’s influence extended beyond his literary works. He was also remembered for his wisdom, counsel and commitment to community development, with his words and performances earning him respect among literary circles, traditional communities and lovers of Yoruba culture.
The family described the deceased as a man of dignity, wisdom and compassion, noting that he touched many lives through his friendship, intellectual contributions and dedication to his heritage.
“His presence commanded respect, while his words often inspired reflection and appreciation of our shared heritage,” the family said.
His death marks the loss of one of the notable custodians of Yoruba oral tradition, particularly Ijala, a poetic art form traditionally associated with hunters and used to celebrate courage, history, nature and communal values.
While mourning his death, the family said it was comforted by the enduring legacy he left through his writings, relationships, values and contribution to society.
“Chief Alabi Ogundepo may have departed this world, but his voice, his poetry and the memories he created will continue to live on,” the family added.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family, which also appealed for prayers and privacy as it comes to terms with the loss.
