The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that it has commenced an internal investigation into allegations of corruption levelled against the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Moshood Jimoh, by social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
The development follows weeks of allegations by the activist, who has repeatedly accused the senior police officer of misconduct in connection with the investigation of a high-profile murder case in Lagos.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said AIG Jimoh had been invited by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) for questioning as part of the police’s internal accountability process.
The police also confirmed that VeryDarkMan had been invited to appear before the FCID in Abuja to provide evidence in support of the claims he made publicly.
According to the Force, while the administrative review is ongoing, the criminal case linked to the allegations is already before a court of competent jurisdiction following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
“The criminal matter referenced in public commentary was investigated and is now before a court of competent jurisdiction, following the advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP). As the matter is sub judice, its adjudication rests solely with the judiciary,” the statement read.
The police stressed that it would not allow media campaigns or public commentary to influence judicial proceedings.
“The Force will not try this case in the media, nor will it allow its outcome to be shaped by public campaigns or commentary seeking to prejudge the officers or parties involved,” it added.
For several weeks, VeryDarkMan has published a series of videos on social media accusing AIG Jimoh of corruption and abuse of office.
He alleged that while serving as Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Jimoh supervised an investigation that falsely linked businessman Ahmed Tajudeen Akanbi to the killings of Sheriff Ishola (Isola) Salami in April 2023 and Demola (Prince) Akinloye in August 2024 in the Ajiran area of Eti-Osa, Lagos.
According to the activist, two suspects arrested in January 2026 initially confessed to involvement in one of the killings without implicating Akanbi. He claimed subsequent statements naming the businessman were obtained under pressure or torture.
VeryDarkMan repeatedly challenged the police authorities and AIG Jimoh to release the original statements made by the suspects, maintaining that if his allegations were proven false, he should face the full weight of the law.
The Force disclosed that it formally invited VeryDarkMan to its Abuja headquarters on July 30, 2026, to substantiate his allegations.
“The Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja, formally issued a letter of invitation to Mr. Otse (VeryDarkMan), inviting him to appear at its Abuja office to substantiate the claims he has made in the public domain,” the statement said.
The police noted that the investigation demonstrates its commitment to holding officers accountable regardless of rank, adding that complaints of misconduct are handled through established mechanisms, including the Force CID, the Complaint Response Unit and, where necessary, the Office of the Inspector-General of Police.
While reaffirming Nigerians’ constitutional right to demand accountability and express their opinions, the Force warned that freedom of expression should not be used to spread unverified allegations or defame individuals.
It maintained that any officer found culpable after investigation would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law, while false and malicious allegations intended to damage the reputation of officers or the institution could also attract legal consequences.
The police urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation extended to him and allow both the administrative investigation and the ongoing court proceedings to run their lawful course.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains an institution founded on law, discipline and accountability. No officer is above the law, and no genuine complaint is ignored; nor will any officer be sanctioned outside the procedures the law prescribes,” the statement added.
