Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has admitted disappointment over Reece James’ latest injury setback, revealing that the club captain is unlikely to return to action within the next few weeks following successful knee surgery.
Alonso spoke during his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League meeting with Everton on Saturday, confirming that the club had yet to establish a definite timeline for the defender’s return.
James underwent surgery after sustaining an injury in training, ruling him out of Chelsea’s recent league matches against Brentford and Bournemouth.
The setback is another frustrating moment for the England international, whose career has been repeatedly disrupted by injuries, particularly hamstring and knee problems.
Speaking about the defender, Alonso said the entire team was disappointed, especially because James had hoped to make a strong start after the international break.
“We are all disappointed, especially for him. He wanted to have a good start after the international break, but he picked up an injury,” the manager said.
“We wanted to be cautious and wait for the tests. Now the surgery has been successful. He will be close to the team.”
However, Alonso warned that James would not be back in action in the immediate future, stressing that the club would prioritise a proper recovery rather than rush the captain back onto the pitch.
“We don’t have the exact time. It’s not going to be short, or two-three weeks. After Christmas, time will tell. Things have to be done properly,” he added.
The Chelsea boss acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the injury but expressed confidence in the depth of his squad to cope with the captain’s absence.
Asked whether James’ injury could influence Chelsea’s transfer plans in January, Alonso played down the possibility, saying the club expected the defender to return around that period.
“No, I don’t think so. We expect he will be back,” he said.
Alonso also confirmed that Chelsea had no fresh injury concerns beyond James ahead of the Everton encounter.
Alonso expects tough test against Everton
Turning his attention to Saturday’s fixture, the Chelsea manager warned that his side would face a demanding challenge against Everton, particularly given the intensity and atmosphere expected at the match.
“Tomorrow is going to be tough. But we are looking forward to this game, intensity, high demand and tempo. A good atmosphere. We are looking forward to it,” Alonso said.
Chelsea head into the encounter looking to maintain their momentum following a 5-1 victory over Bournemouth, after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Brentford in their previous league outing.
With James unavailable, Alonso will be hoping his remaining defensive options can deliver a solid performance as Chelsea seek a positive result away from home.
