MTN, Nigeria’s largest telecom operator, has announced plans to enhance its services following the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval of a 50 percent tariff increase.
This move, regarded as vital for revitalizing the telecom sector, has contributed 14 percent to Nigeria’s economy but has also faced strong opposition from subscribers and advocacy groups.
With 77 million subscribers, MTN stated in a press release to The PUNCH on Tuesday that the tariff increase is crucial for sustaining important investments.
The company highlighted that the change marks a significant milestone in ensuring the long-term viability of the telecom industry, helping to empower millions of individuals and businesses while contributing to the broader economic growth of the nation.
MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Karl Toriola, emphasized that the tariff adjustment is a necessary response to the economic challenges affecting the business and the industry.
He explained, “This adjustment is vital for us to continue making the investments required to offer reliable, high-quality services to Nigerians. We are committed to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation and promoting inclusive growth for all stakeholders.”
Toriola also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the NCC, and other industry bodies for their support.
The NCC approved the tariff change on Monday, addressing telecom operators’ requests for a 100 percent increase to cope with rising operational costs.
In a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs, the NCC noted that this is the first tariff adjustment since 2013. The regulator capped the increase at 50 percent, a significant reduction from the over 100 percent initially requested by some operators.
The NCC characterized this decision as a balanced approach, taking into account both the financial pressures faced by network operators and the need to protect consumers and ensure the sustainability of the industry.
